Selena Gomez has clapped back at a TikTok user who commented on a video clip she made about drinking.

On November 30, Gomez posted a 'duet' video to TikTok, which shows her making faces in response to an original video by Dr. Dawn Bantel, explaining the recommended maximum intake for alcoholic drinks for men and women.

Bantel says in the clip: 'The CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) defines heavy drinking as 15 or more drinks a week for men and eight or more drinks per week for women.'

In a split screen response-repost shared to her own account, the 'Selfish Love' singer filmed herself pulling faces at Bantel's remarks, seemingly looks of shock and disbelief.

Gomez' post, though now captioned 'it's a joke', went on to receive negative attention from some commentators, including one user who wrote:

'So one of your best friends gives you her kidney and you continue to drink excessively. Damn Selena.'

While Gomez - who has been open about her mental health issues and the impact of social media in the past - doesn't typically respond to trolls, she did on this occasion.

The Rare Beauty founder, who also recently launched her own mental health company, WonderMind, replied with: 'It was a joke ass,' and her fans had her back, with one writing: 'The fact you need to say that this is a joke. I love you.'

Gomez underwent a kidney transplant back in 2017 (due to a lupus diagnosis in 2015) when her TV actor friend, Francia Raisa, donated one of her organs to the Disney star.

At the time of the surgery, a then 25-year-old Gomez had wrote in an Instagram post that 'there aren’t words to describe' how she felt after Raisa, then 29, gave her 'the ultimate gift and sacrifice by donating her kidney'.

These words accompanied a photo Gomez posted of her and The Secret Life of the American Teenager actress lying side-by-side in hospital beds.

Gomez' lupus disease causes the body to 'mistakenly attacks its own tissues, sometimes including the kidneys', the chief medical officer for an organ sharing network, Dr David Klassen, told The Guardian.

Around the time of Gomez' kidney transplant, Klassen told the publication that her lupus condition is more typical of younger women.

He also said that he expected her to react well to the transplant, which he highlighted agrees more with younger women.

Receiving the transplant was a way to improve Gomez's overall health.

After being diagnosed with the autoimmune disease, she had previously taken a career break to combat anxiety, depression and panic attacks - the latter of which she first struggled with during her during the tour of her Revival album in 2016.

Gomez has criticised people in the past for making 'tasteless' jokes about organ transplants.

At one point US legal drama The Good Fight was in the firing line for discussing her transplant, but a source for the show later explained the show's characters were, in fact, outlining that Gomez' situation was one of the topics that shouldn't be joked about.

The source told The Hollywood Reporter that this would be made clear when watching the episode in full.

With new business venture WonderMind, for which Gomez's mum, Hollywood producer Mandy Teefey, heads up the creative content, she wants to help support people with their mental health.

And the topic of mental health is one that Gomez has linked to social media in the past.

When speaking about her decision to break away from it, she recently told Entrepreneur Magazine: ‘There was a huge release of no longer feeling like I’m in this tiny phone where people are saying the most hateful things.

'Why would I fill up my days with that?'

Gomez, who on TikTok alone has close to 4o million followers, now wants to 'lend my voice to places where it matters', she told the same publication.

Her recent social media activity has centred around new album Revelación, and suggests she'll continue to use her fame and huge following base (which amounts to 276 million on Instagram, just over 65 million on Twitter and almost 87 million on Facebook) to inspire her fans and to support mental health.
