PC Chacko quits Congress citing groupism in the party

In a major blow to the Congress, PC Chacko on Wednesday resigned from the Congress citing groupism and lack of leadership.

"There is no democracy left in the Congress. Candidate list has not been discussed with the state Congress committee. I have quit the Congress and sent my resignation to party's interim chief Sonia Gandhi,’ Chacko said at a press conference.

Chacko said factionalism within the party had made it impossible for him to continue in the Congress. His resignation is a mark of his protest against the Congress, he added.

"I worked hard for the party, but it is really difficult to work with the Kerala Congress team. I stood with every decision taken by Congress, but it's now very difficult. You can't run a party with one central character," the veteran politician said.

The Congress has been working like a headless party and has been continuing without president for over a year, he stated.

He said that the party has been unable to find a president for over a year, adding that nobody is questioning the party leadership, including Rahul Gandhi. He said that the Congress party is weakening with each passing day.

Chacko was a part of the 40-member Kerala state election committee. Kerala goes to polls on April 6.

Beginning his political career in the Kerala Students Union, Chacko was once the Indian Youth Congress state president. He was first elected to Kerala Legislative Assembly from the Piravam constituency in 1980 and was appointed as the Minister for Industries in EK Nayanar’s Cabinet.

Chacko was a Member of Parliament from the Thrissur Lok Sabha seat from 2009 to 2014.

In the 2014 Lok Sabha Elections, Chacko contested from the Chalakudy Lok Sabha constituency, but was defeated by film actor Innocent.

He was also the chairperson of the Joint Parliamentary Committee to probe the alleged scam in the grant of 2G spectrum and telecom license from 1998 to 2009. Inputs from PTI, ANI, The Quint, News18
