Chelsea should make a move for Sergio Aguero when the striker’s contract at Manchester City expires this summer, former England international Paul Merson has said.

Aguero is City’s record goalscorer but is being allowed to leave the club at the end of the season after 10 seasons in the Premier League.

The Argentinian has scored 181 goals in the league during that time, fourth on the all-time list, and will be available on a free transfer this summer.

Chelsea are fifth in the Premier League under Thomas Tuchel but have lacked a leading goalscorer this season, with Mason Mount, Tammy Abraham and Jorginho their top scorers in the league with six goals this campaign.

Timo Werner has managed just five following his move from RB Leipzig, and Merson believes Aguero can be the striker the club needs to help them challenge for the title next season.

“He [Aguero] ticks the box for me and the way Chelsea play,” he told Sky Sports.

“Chelsea are dominant in football matches, they dictate games and have a lot of possession, they play neat and tidy football around the box and they are looking for that little ball, so you need an Aguero who is sharp over three to five yards.

“I like Tammy Abraham and Olivier Giroud, they are good players, but are they going to win you the Premier League? No, and I say that because they are not going to be in the top five or six goal scorers in the league.

“You look at Chelsea now and Mason Mount and Abraham have got six goals and are their joint-top scorers in the league, so that is why Chelsea are where they are.

“If you put someone in that team who has scored 20 goals and are second behind Harry Kane and Mohamed Salah, then that could be another 10, 11, 12, 15 points, it could be 14 winning goals.

“I think they need a centre-forward who can score goals as Timo Werner has not worked.”

Aguero has been hit by injuries this season and has made just 15 appearance for City as a result, scoring three goals.

Earlier this week, his manager Pep Guardiola said the striker would be free to join another Premier League side if he wanted to.

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has ruled out a move to Old Trafford for Aguero, but Arsenal has been described as a “good fit” for the 32-year-old by former Gunners and City left-back Gael Clichy.
