Do these ‘shaggy’ mushrooms taste like fish? We investigate the TikTok trend

Are these hairy little mushrooms as good as a lobster?

It seems somewhat weird that I would compare a vegetable and a sea creature — but TikTok makes me do a lot of weird things.

People describe these Lion’s Mane mushrooms as “shaggy” (gag), but they allegedly have a ton of health benefits, including alleviating stress and boosting your immune system.

I am going to actually eat these to see how much they taste like seafood. If my stress goes away, that will just be an added bonus.

How to cook Lion’s Mane mushrooms

Due to the unique taste of Lion’s Mane mushrooms, it’s best to cook them as simply as possible. I chopped them up and cooked them in a pan. I didn’t even add any olive oil. So far, I love this recipe because it requires almost no effort.

Cooked — the mushrooms still don’t look like a lobster at all. I added some mayonnaise, lemon juice and a little bit of hot sauce to make it more consistent with a lobster roll, both in taste and appearance.

Do Lion’s Mane mushrooms really taste like lobster?

Yes. I was really surprised by how these taste. It’s not quite identical to lobster, but if someone served this to me and told me it was lobster, or if I just assumed it was lobster, I don’t think I’d question what I was eating at all.

Although the texture is a lot softer, it’s not as stringy or meaty as lobster or even crab.

Lion’s Mane is one of the healthiest mushrooms out there, and if you’ve got any picky vegetarian eaters on your hands, this is definitely a solid meat alternative.
