Yahoo Finance Shang-Chi's Awkwafina on Blaccent controversy
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings actress Awkwafina has responded to the Blaccent controversy surrounding some of her performances, notably in two of her most popular films Crazy Rich Asians and Ocean's 8.
Referencing when non-Black individuals adopt a so-called Black voice, the Blaccent lends itself to cultural misappropriation accusations, which the star was recently forced to address during an interview (via Reuters Showbiz).
"Um... You know, I'm open to the conversation," she said. "I think it really is something that I think is a little bit multi-faceted and layered, and so... yeah."

Not the most expansive response, but this does at least open the subject up for further discussion in the future.
Shang-Chi co-star Simu Liu has also recently addressed controversy surrounding Asian toxic masculinity, which he describes as a "very dangerous rhetoric that sometimes circulates around our community".
"I detest hearing that in-fighting within the community," he said. "We should be uplifting each other and sticking together."

In separate news, Awkwafina also recently spoke of keeping things platonic between her character Katy and Simu Liu's Shang-Chi/Shaun in a potential sequel earlier this month.
"I think they have a really, really strong friendship, and that friendship is one based on loyalty and a blind trust on Katy's part, for sure, and also kind of an unspoken understanding," she explained.
"I think Shaun and Katy have a really wonderful relationship where they support each other, where they love each other in their way, and they have this carefree energy where they can really, truly be themselves around each other," added Liu. "Whether that's romantic or not, that's not necessarily up for me to decide."
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is out now in cinemas.
