Sharon Osbourne tearful as she defends Piers Morgan on 'The Talk'

Sharon Osbourne was close to tears as she defended her friend Piers Morgan during a heated discussion on US chat show The Talk.

Morgan stepped down from ITV's Good Morning Britain this week following a backlash when he said he did not believe Meghan Markle after she told Oprah Winfrey she had suffered with her mental health and had suicidal thoughts.

Osbourne has been one of Morgan’s most outspoken supporters during the controversy, writing him a message on Twitter saying “I stand by you”.

And on Wednesday she got into a debate on her US chat show while she was explaining why she had Morgan’s back.

“I feel even like I’m about to be put in the electric chair because I have a friend who many people think is a racist so that makes me a racist,” she said during a conversation with her co-host Sheryl Underwood.

Osbourne told Underwood, who is Black: “Don’t try and cry, because if anyone should be crying, it should be me.”

She added: “You tell me where you have heard him say, educate me, tell me when you have heard him say racist things.

“Educate me. Tell me.”

Underwood said it was “not the exact words of racism” but “the implication and the reaction to it, to not want to address that because she is a Black woman and to try to dismiss it or to make it seem less than what it is, that’s what makes it racist”.

The comedian also said that she did not want viewers to think she was “attacking” Osbourne for being racist.

But the former X Factor judge replied: “It’s too late, I think that seed is already sewn.”

Morgan left GMB this week, after his remarks about the Duchess of Sussex sparked more than 41,000 complaints.

He later restated his opinion in a post on Twitter, saying “freedom of speech is a hill I’m happy to die on”.

Osbourne - who worked with the presenter on America's Got Talent - was among those to wade in, tweeting: “@piersmorgan I am with you. I stand by you.

"People forget that you’re paid for your opinion and that you’re just speaking your truth.”

Morgan thanked her for her support, posting: “When stuff like this happens, true friends run towards you, fake friends run away.

"I love Sharon Osbourne because she always stays true to herself.

"She knew she would get abused by the woke brigade for tweeting this – but did it anyway because it what she believes.”
