Sharon Stone says she was misled about infamous 'Basic Instinct' scene

Sharon Stone says she was misled into removing her underwear for her infamous Basic Instinct scene.

The star, 63, said she was asked to remove her underwear because it was “reflecting the light” during the leg-crossing scene and that she had no idea that anything would be visible.

When she saw the 1992 film for the first time she slapped director Paul Verhoeven across the face, she writes in her memoir The Beauty Of Living Twice.

In an excerpt obtained by Vanity Fair, Stone said after the film had been shot she was called in to see it alongside “a room full of agents and lawyers”.

“That was how I saw my vagina-shot for the first time, long after I’d been told, ‘We can’t see anything - I just need you to remove your panties, as the white is reflecting the light, so we know you have panties on’,” she said.

“Yes, there have been many points of view on this topic, but since I’m the one with the vagina in question, let me say: The other points of view are b*******.”

Stone said after watching the film she went to the projection booth, slapped Verhoeven then contacted her lawyer, who apparently said she could get an injunction.

The star spent time weighing up her options, asking herself: “What if I were the director? What if I had gotten that shot? What if I had gotten it on purpose? Or by accident? What if it just existed?”

“I knew what film I was doing,” she said. “For heaven’s sake, I fought for that part, and all that time, only this director had stood up for me. I had to find some way to become objective.”

In the end, she allowed the scene to be included "because it was correct for the film and for the character; and because, after all, I did it".

Verhoeven has previously suggested that Stone was not misled about the explicit scene.

“Sharon is lying,” he told ICON in 2017.

“Any actress knows what she’s going to see if you ask her to take off her underwear and point there with the camera.”

The movie follows detective Nick Curran (Michael Douglas) as he investigates a murder, and ends up in a relationship with suspect Catherine Tramell (Stone).
