A raging company boss smashed his wife's head through a window after she refused to clean up his sick after a night out.

Shaun McCallion left his wife Victoria with a gash to her forehead that went down to the bone and told arresting officers: “She knows I’m not the sort of person to shout at.”

She was also left with a cut to her arm when she tried to protect her face during the attack in February 2020.

The 44-year-old, of Snitterfield, Warwickshire, who has a previous conviction for assaulting his wife, claimed it was an accident and tried to have the charged dims before pleading guilty to wounding her.

The defendant, who heads a Solihull construction company, was jailed for 18 months at Coventry Crown Court, when Mrs McCallion, who accompanied him in court, said: “Everything’s going to be fine OK, everything’s going to be fine.”

She told the judge: “This is not going to help anyone. Why is no-one listening to me?”

The couple, who have three children, were in a 12-year relationship that had continued despite the attack.

The court heard the pair had been out with friends and she was tipsy while he was drunk.

She had gone to bed but heard him throwing up and calling for help. When she saw he had been sick on the floor, she asked him: “What do you expect me to do about it?”

McCallion went into a rage, taking the seat off the toilet and attempting to pull a door from it hinges, then a struggle broke out as his wife tried to calm him.

It moved into the hall which contained an internal window, which McCallion pushed his wife into, smashing it.

Judge Andrew Lockhart QC said: "This accused put his hand to the back of her head and pushed it hard. The risk of serious injury was obvious, and yet he continued to take it."

He said it was "miraculous" Mrs McCallion has not been left with a permanent, visible scar.

“While there was no intention to put her head through the glass, that is the reality of the situation. It was a highly reckless act committed in drink, causing really serious harm," he added.

Mrs McCallion went to tend to her wound and called for an ambulance, while her husband told police on the way to the station: "There are two sides to any story."

He told detectives his wife became angry when she slipped on his sick and she fell on the window.

The court heard McCallion has previous convictions for excess alcohol in 2006 and battery in 2016, when he punched her and banged her head against a wall after a wedding.

Defending, Lucy Tapper said the relationship was not characterised by violence and the defendant had issues with alcohol – which she said he has not touched since – and stress.

The hallway struggle was "two-way" and McCallion had not forced his wife's head through the window, Tapper said.

"[Victoria] has accompanied him today, and I have spoken to her and the healing is incredible, fortunately," the lawyer said.

“He has now done everything in his power to right the wrongs in his life that have led to this. He is heartbroken at what he did to the woman he loves."

“This is the woman he loves, and they have three children who he has been kept away from [as a bail condition] for the last year. This is a close, loving family who want to be back together."

But the judge told the defendant: “Mrs McCallion is here. She is supportive of you. She has been inconsistent in her account and has said it was an accident. It was not an accident.

“Remorse is urged on me. The time for remorse was for you to come to the court and plead guilty at the first opportunity, but you did not, and you made an application to dismiss it."
