HOUSTON, Jan 23 (Reuters) - Royal Dutch Shell Plc (LSE: 0LN9.L - news) shut the small crude distillation unit (CDU) at its 325,700-barrel-per-day (bpd) joint-venture Deer Park, Texas, refinery on Tuesday for repairs, sources familiar with plant operations said.

A timeline for repairs on the 70,000-bpd DU-1 CDU was not available on Tuesday, the sources said.

Shell (LSE: RDSB.L - news) spokesman Ray Fisher said the company routinely planned maintenance work at its plants, but declined to discuss the status of specific units at the Deer Park refinery.

The Deer Park refinery has two CDUs, of which DU-1 is the smaller, that do the primary refining of crude oil and provide hydrocarbon feedstock to all other units.

The Deer Park refinery is a 50-50 joint venture between Shell and Mexico's national oil company, Petroleos Mexicanos . (Reporting by Erwin Seba; Editing by Lisa Shumaker and Peter Cooney)
