A suspected shoplifter was arrested after being caught fleeing a supermarket with a Christmas tree under each arm.

At about 9.30pm on Monday officers were on foot patrol in Newcastle, when they spotted a man leaving the Morrisons supermarket.

The man caught the interest of police as he was spotted running from the store carrying two trees, leaving a trail of pine needles behind him.
