The shopping basket items that have changed most in price as inflation drops

Food price growth is slowing in the UK, with the price drop in bread, cake, meat, milk and eggs helping bring inflation down to a two-year low.

The price of bread and cakes fell between October and November as did meat, milk, cheese and eggs, and soft drinks, according to data published by the Office for National Statistics (ONS).

Bread saw a particularly sharp slowdown in inflation, with the average price up 3.2% in the year to November compared with a jump of 8.5% in October.

Sugar, pizza and quiche, air travel and frozen vegetables all saw inflation at least three percentage points lower in November compared with October.

Second-hand car prices fell by 2.1% between October and November, a bigger fall than last year.

Air fares fell by 13.9% between October and November, compared with 10.1% a year ago.

Items where inflation accelerated in the year to November include children’s footwear (up 12.2% compared with a rise of 8.1% in October) and frozen seafood (up 8.9% compared with 5.8%). Fruit was also pricier.
