Simon Mayo is making his return to national drivetime with a new show on Greatest Hits Radio.

From 15 March, he'll be playing the hits from the 70s, 80s and 90s in a comeback he's described as "very exciting".

The 62-year-old said in a statement: “Returning to Drivetime is so very exciting for me. It’s a show I loved so much and now on Greatest Hits Radio we intend to make it even better. And with Matt Williams back on sport, we can’t wait to get started.

"The message of the show is the same - enjoy yourself, it’s later than you think!”

Mayo hosted BBC Radio 2's drive time show from 2010 until 2018, when he left the station.

It came just months after Jo Whiley came aboard to co-present with Mayo in a move that sparked a backlash from the audience.

Mayo later shared that he told the BBC he thought it was a “mistake” to introduce the presenter to the show.

He continued to host his radio programme with critic Mark Kermode, Kermode and Mayo's Film Review on BBC Radio 5 Live.

Gary Stein, Group Programme Director for the Hits Radio Brand Network, said of Mayo's appointment: “We’re so excited to have one of the UK's most loved radio presenters hosting an all-new Drivetime Show on Greatest Hits Radio.

"With Simon playing the amazing music that the nation grew up with from the 70s, 80s and 90s along with his warmth and personality, I know audiences will love his new show”.

Mayo is set to leave his current daily programme on classical station Scala but will continue with a weekend show instead.
