Yahoo Finance Singapore 'gravely concerned' over Myanmar situation: MFA
SINGAPORE — Singapore has expressed its “grave concern” about the ongoing political situation in Myanmar, which has seen its civilian leaders detained and its military declaring a one-year state of emergency.
“We are monitoring the situation closely and hope all parties involved will exercise restraint, maintain dialogue, and work towards a positive and peaceful outcome,” said the Singapore’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) in a statement on Monday (1 February).
“Myanmar is a close friend of Singapore and key member of ASEAN. We hope that the situation will return to normal as soon as possible,” the statement added, referring to the Association of South-east Asian Nations (ASEAN).
According to media reports, Myanmar’s civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi and other members of her National League for Democracy (NLD) party were detained early on Monday – the first day of the new parliamentary sessions after the NLD’s landslide victory in the country’s general election last November.
The actions, which have been described as a “coup” by many media outlets, also come amid claims by the military of widespread voter fraud. The state Union Election Commission denied the allegations last week.
