SolarEdge Technologies' (NASDAQ:SEDG) earnings growth rate lags the 51% CAGR delivered to shareholders

Long term investing can be life changing when you buy and hold the truly great businesses. And we've seen some truly amazing gains over the years. To wit, the SolarEdge Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ:SEDG) share price has soared 694% over five years. If that doesn't get you thinking about long term investing, we don't know what will. Also pleasing for shareholders was the 37% gain in the last three months. We love happy stories like this one. The company should be really proud of that performance!

While this past week has detracted from the company's five-year return, let's look at the recent trends of the underlying business and see if the gains have been in alignment.

To quote Buffett, 'Ships will sail around the world but the Flat Earth Society will flourish. There will continue to be wide discrepancies between price and value in the marketplace...' One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).

During five years of share price growth, SolarEdge Technologies achieved compound earnings per share (EPS) growth of 2.7% per year. This EPS growth is lower than the 51% average annual increase in the share price. This suggests that market participants hold the company in higher regard, these days. And that's hardly shocking given the track record of growth. This optimism is visible in its fairly high P/E ratio of 144.63.

You can see how EPS has changed over time in the image below (click on the chart to see the exact values).

It's probably worth noting that the CEO is paid less than the median at similar sized companies. But while CEO remuneration is always worth checking, the really important question is whether the company can grow earnings going forward. Dive deeper into the earnings by checking this interactive graph of SolarEdge Technologies' earnings, revenue and cash flow.

A Different Perspective

We're pleased to report that SolarEdge Technologies shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 30% over one year. However, the TSR over five years, coming in at 51% per year, is even more impressive. Potential buyers might understandably feel they've missed the opportunity, but it's always possible business is still firing on all cylinders. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. For example, we've discovered 3 warning signs for SolarEdge Technologies that you should be aware of before investing here.
