Sonic the Hedgehog 2 set photos have confirmed the surprise appearance of Knuckles.

It was previously thought that the animated character might not have been part of the sequel, with Tails taking the spotlight instead – as teased at the end of the previous movie.

As you can see from the filming shot below, though, Knuckles will indeed join his speedy blue pal on the big screen.

Knuckles, Tails and Sonic are represented through physical stand-in props here, to help with the human performers' eyelines as they interact with the characters.

Co-writer Pat Casey previously teased that the follow-up could feature Knuckles, after the Echidna tribe were seen in the first movie.

He told Fandom: "Knuckles is an Echidna so I would guess they're related in some way, but what exactly that relationship is... we'll have to see how things develop. But the Echidna tribe was definitely not chosen at random."

Meanwhile, director Jeff Fowler previously spoke to Digital Spy about the "anxiety" surrounding Sonic's redesign, following the infamous backlash to the CGI in the original trailer.

"I think it had been about five months that had passed since the first trailer," he recalled. "We had worked very hard on our updates to the character. It was definitely a little bit of like, 'Oh man, what happens if they don't like this?'

"But really, everyone that saw it internally as I was working on the film, just responded so positively. It really felt like, once we shared it with the fans, they would really embrace it and be excited about it."

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is due for release on April 8, 2022.
