South Africa in "no way" near a total blackout: minister

CAPE TOWN (Reuters) - South Africa is in "no way close" to a total power blackout as utility Eskom struggles to meet demand for electricity, a government minister said on Wednesday. "Load shedding at stage 3 shows the seriousness of the constraints that we face but it is in no way an indication that we are close to a blackout," Minister of Public Enterprises, Lynne Brown told reporters, referring to power cuts. Eskom, which provides 95 percent of the country's power, has been implementing frequent controlled blackouts to prevent the grid from collapsing.
