South Park is returning to the small screen with a supersized coronavirus-themed episode that is sure to stir up some controversy, as is usually the case...

Earlier this week, Comedy Central announced that the hit animated show will premiere its hour-long broadcast – entitled The Pandemic Special – on Wednesday, September 30.

It also revealed that it will centre on Stan's father Randy (voiced by co-creator Trey Parker) as he capitalises on the growing demand for drugs and "comes to terms with his role in the COVID-19 outbreak."

Elsewhere, the crisis is set to prove challenging for the other residents of South Park, including the kids, who head back to school only to realise that nothing resembles the normal they once knew.

"Not their teachers, not their homeroom, not even Eric Cartman," the official synopsis reads, while the trailer depicts him kicking up a stink about having to sit in class again after weeks of remote learning and dossing around in his pyjamas.

The special, like all new episodes of season 24 going forward, will be available on US streaming service HBO Max 24 hours after its Comedy Central premiere. South Park's uncensored episodes will also be available to download on iTunes, Amazon Instant Video, XBOX Live, Google Play, Sony Entertainment Network, Vudu and Verizon Flexview.

Last month, ViacomCBS's newly appointed Senior Vice President of Adult Animation Grant Gish touched on reports that claimed that Parker and fellow showrunner Matt Stone were developing a whole bunch of South Park specials and movies to release over the coming months.

"As long as you're doing something new, and that could be anything from a new style to a new tone to a new voice coming from a specific writer, I think it can work," he told CNBC.

"An animation audience is looking for something unique. That's what The Simpsons and South Park have famously done. So I want to try a little bit of everything, even though a lot of it will be targeted to the tried and true with brands people know."

South Park airs on Comedy Central, Netflix and NOW TV in the UK.
