Spain's gas demand for power generation jumped 80% in Jan-Sep, Enagas says

MADRID (Reuters) - Demand for natural gas for power generation in Spain rose 80% in the first nine months of the year as neighbouring France and Portugal imported more electricity from the country, gas grid operator Enagas said on Tuesday.

The Spanish and Portuguese governments introduced a subsidy in May to limit the price of natural gas used for power generation in a bid to curb electricity prices.

Spanish gas exports rose to the equivalent of 14.1 Terawatthours during the period as a result of increased demand in the rest of Europe, which has been forced to wean itself off Russian gas following the war in Ukraine.

During the period, gas demand from households and companies fell 17% as a result of higher prices.
