Spirit Airlines' (NYSE:SAVE) Shareholders Are Down 55% On Their Shares

Even the best stock pickers will make plenty of bad investments. And unfortunately for Spirit Airlines, Inc. (NYSE:SAVE) shareholders, the stock is a lot lower today than it was a year ago. To wit the share price is down 55% in that time. Notably, shareholders had a tough run over the longer term, too, with a drop of 53% in the last three years. On top of that, the share price is down 8.3% in the last week. This could be related to the recent financial results - you can catch up on the most recent data by reading our company report.

To quote Buffett, 'Ships will sail around the world but the Flat Earth Society will flourish. There will continue to be wide discrepancies between price and value in the marketplace...' By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.

During the last year Spirit Airlines saw its earnings per share drop below zero. While this may prove temporary, we'd consider it a negative, so it doesn't surprise us that the stock price is down. We hope for shareholders' sake that the company becomes profitable again soon.

We like that insiders have been buying shares in the last twelve months. Even so, future earnings will be far more important to whether current shareholders make money. Before buying or selling a stock, we always recommend a close examination of historic growth trends, available here..

A Different Perspective

While the broader market gained around 15% in the last year, Spirit Airlines shareholders lost 55%. Even the share prices of good stocks drop sometimes, but we want to see improvements in the fundamental metrics of a business, before getting too interested. Unfortunately, last year's performance may indicate unresolved challenges, given that it was worse than the annualised loss of 9% over the last half decade. We realise that Baron Rothschild has said investors should "buy when there is blood on the streets", but we caution that investors should first be sure they are buying a high quality business. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. Take risks, for example - Spirit Airlines has 2 warning signs (and 1 which shouldn't be ignored) we think you should know about.
