'We're on our way!' Scottish joy sweeps social media after sealing historic Euro 2020 spot

Watch: Scotland end major tournament drought with dramatic Euro 2020 qualification

Praise has poured in for Scotland’s football team after they qualified for a major tournament for the first time this century.

Scotland qualified for Euro 2020 - their first major football tournament since 1998 - after a dramatic penalty shootout win over Serbia.

The team were 1-0 up thanks to a goal from Ryan Christie but Serbia equalised in the 90th minute to force extra time.

But Scotland goalkeeper David Marshall was the hero of the night, saving a penalty from Aleksandar Mitrovic to ensure a historic 5-4 win on penalties.

It means they will now head to the delayed Euro 2020 championships, set to take place next year, where they will join England, Croatia and the Czech Republic in Group D.

Scotland manager Steve Clarke, who praised his squad for “turning up”, was joined by Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon in praising the team.

She tweeted: “Massive congratulations to Steve Clarke and the team. After 22 years, @ScotlandNY men are off to a major tournament. What a lift for the country. Well done!”

Boris Johnson tweeted: “So great to see Scotland going forward to the Euros. Massive well done to the whole team.”

Scottish Labour also wrote: “WOW. Just wow. We’re on our way! Well done Steve Clarke and Scotland men’s team. #EURO2020 Here we come.”

Psychic Uri Geller, who has previously claimed he sent Scotland crashing out of Euro 96 using just his own mind, shared a video of himself predicting that Mitrović wouldn’t score.

In the clip, he says: “He is going to miss. He is not going to score”, followed by celebrations when the penalty is saved.

He tweeted: “I believe in my powers. Well done Scotland I’m inviting you all to my private Scottish island for more inspiration Lamb Island. Uri.”

Jack Whitehall joined in the praise, tweeting: “I’ll raise a Bucky to that! #Scotland #EURO2020,” while Scottish comedian wrote: “Mad Scotland! Said it years ago that we’d quality for Euro 2021. Brilliant.”

Videos of ecstatic Scotland players celebrating in the dressing room after their win was also shared online.

Clips included one shared by journalist Francis Keogh, who posted footage of players dancing to Baccara's 'Yes Sir, I Can Boogie', with the comment: “I’ll never say ‘boogie’ the same way again.”

Scottish player John McGinn joined in the celebrations, while another tweet from the Scotland National Team referred to a scene from Trainspotting starring Ewan McGregor, saying: “It’s actually pretty good being Scottish”.

Scottish TV presenter Eilidh Barbour shared an image of her own dramatic reaction, saying the picture of her with arms aloft summed up her feelings on the night.

She wrote: “WHAT. A. NIGHT!! Thanks so much for your messages. An absolute privilege to be part of a brilliant team in front of and behind the cameras. The emotion is real, it’s been a long time, now bring on the Euro’s!!! (I think the pic maybe sums it up....).”
