Blues fly Joel Edmundson's parents to St. Louis to watch son receive Stanley Cup ring

The 2019 Stanley Cup Finals was quite the up-and-down experience for Joel Edmundson, a defenceman with the St. Louis Blues at the time.

After playing the first four games of the series, he wasn’t in the lineup for Game 5 or 6. However, with Lord Stanley’s mug hanging in the balance on the road in Boston, Edmundson was inserted into the lineup for Game 7.

The stay-at-home defender helped the Blues emerge with a 4-1 victory and St. Louis claimed its first championship in franchise history as a result.

On Tuesday, Edmundson finally received his Stanley Cup ring and his parents — Bob and Lois — were there to soak in every moment as it happened.

With Tuesday’s game standing as the Hurricanes’ lone visit to the Blues’ home arena this season, Edmundson received his championship ring during a pregame, on-ice ceremony that included a video tribute recapping his four seasons in St. Louis. The 26-year-old was presented the hardware by Blues legend Al MacInnis, as well as captains Alex Pietrangelo, Vladimir Tarasenko and Alex Steen.

The pride of Edmundson’s parents and the gratitude that the fans within the walls of the Enterprise Center showered upon their former rearguard were on full display.

Blues general manager Doug Armstrong had Edmundson’s parents flown to St. Louis from Manitoba the game, according to Jeremy Rutherford of The Athletic.

“(Doug Armstrong) called me a couple weeks ago and mentioned it to me,” Edmundson said, according to Chris Pinkert of stlouisblues.com. “It's a first-class move by (President and CEO Chris) Zimmerman, (Blues Chairman Tom) Stillman all the guys here, the whole organization. They treated me well the whole time in St. Louis, so for them to (fly my parents in), it's really special. My parents are really thankful for that.”

Ahead of the 2019-20 season, Edmundson signed a one-year, $3.1 million deal with St. Louis in August before being traded to Carolina in September. The deal resulted in Justin Faulk becoming a Blue.

Edmundson is the last player from the championship team to receive his ring as most were awarded their bans way back in October.

In 52 games for the Hurricanes this season, Edmundson has four goals and 13 points.
