Stacey Dooley has branded criticism of her new BBC show as "unnecessarily cruel".

On Tuesday it was announced the Strictly Come Dancing winner would front This Is MY House, a new entertainment programme that will see celebrity judges try and guess who owns a property out of the real homeowner and a number of imposters.

The announcement prompted some to disparage the format of the programme, comparing it to something that might be imagined up by Steve Coogan's incompetent broadcaster Alan Partridge.

Responding to backlash on Wednesday, 33-year-old Dooley stated she had received criticism before appearing on Strictly and make-up artist competition Glow Up, which she presents.

"Reading some of the unnecessarily cruel comments re my new gig. I got the same criticism doing strictly and Glow up.

"I did well on Strictly and Glow Up went on to be a global series, that was recommissioned and Netflix took. I don’t know why this platform is so unkind," she shared on Twitter.

The format for the programme has been devised by Richard Bacon and Nick Weidenfeld.

Bacon, who is also an Executive Producer on the show, said of the series: "This Is MY House is a game show with only one contestant - the homeowner. To win all they have to do is prove 'This is MY house!'. But it’s not that simple. Three actors will turn up, steal the contestant’s name and claim that the house and everything in it belongs to them.

"They all have competing stories. Our judges have one job. To uncover the truth. It couldn’t be easier. Right?”

Meanwhile, Dooley said she was "so excited" to be hosting the guessing game.

"I love to see inside people's houses so I'm made up to be involved in a gig that allows us to do that in a format that will bring some fun, humour and warmth at a time when we are all so craving escapism. Can’t wait!” she shared.
