ATHENS (Reuters) -Aegean Airlines, Greece's largest carrier, reported a smaller loss in the first quarter compared to the same period a year earlier, as passenger traffic recovered from pandemic travel restrictions. Aegean, a member of the Star Alliance airlines group, reported a net loss of 38.5 million euros ($41.22 million) in the January-to-March period compared to a loss of 44.5 million in the first quarter of 2021. Chief Executive Dimitris Gerogiannis said the airline managed to shrink its loss in the first quarter despite the doubling of fuel costs compared to 2019 and the prevalence of the Omicron variant.

LONDON (Reuters) -British finance minister Rishi Sunak said on Thursday that high inflation was causing acute distress to Britons, and that he expected the Bank of England to take "decisive action" to get prices back under control. British consumer price inflation hit a 40-year high of 9.0% in April, and the Bank of England has forecast it will reach double digits by the end of this year when regulated energy prices are set to rise by a further 40%. Sunak said the BoE's independence to set interest rates was the best way to ensure inflation returned to its 2% target, following criticism from some members of his party that the central bank has been too slow to raise rates.
