STOCKS NEWS EUROPE-UK small caps close higher, outpace FTSE

The FTSE small cap index and junior-listed AIM shares rise 0.4 percent and 0.5 percent respectively, outperforming the mid-caps, up 0.35 percent, and the blue chips, up 0.2 percent.

Africa-focused gold miner Avocet Mining (LSE: AVM.L - news) falls 14 percent after saying its revenue fell to $149.3 million in 2013 from $204.1 million a year earlier.

"While 2013 was a difficult year for both the gold price and the company, we have now refocused our efforts at Inata and put in place several key initiatives to underpin the mine's future," David Cather, chief executive officer, says in a statement.

Potash miner Sirius Minerals (Other OTC: SRUXF - news) falls 7.7 percent to 12 pence, after proposing to place new ordinary shares at a price of 12 pence per placing share.
