Stocks waver as Google, Amazon earnings await

Winners and losers

Stocks getting hit today include Groupon following its acquisition of rival LivingSocial; GNC as company-owned same-store sales fell 8.5% last quarter; and Nokia, with shares of the network infrastructure company dropping after it reported a third consecutive quarterly loss and the resignation of its CFO.

Stocks getting a lift today include Tesla Motors after the electric carmaker announced a surprise profit beat and record sales numbers; Buffalo Wild Wings as the restaurant chain issued an earnings beat; and Western Digital, with shares spinning higher as the memory and disk-drive maker reported strong product demand, driven by cloud and mobile use.

Apple’s revamped MacBook Pro

Apple just wrapped up its Hello Again event, where the tech giant unveiled its long-awaited MacBook Pro redesign. Joining the Final Round to discuss is Yahoo Finance technology editor Dan Howley.

Looking ahead

  • At 8:30 a.m. ET, it’s a big one tomorrow: the first estimate of third-quarter GDP. The Street’s looking for 2.5% growth, a big bump from the prior quarter’s 1.4%.

  • The energy giants roll out earnings reports starting with Exxon, Chevron and Philips 66.

  • And we’ll also get the University of Michigan’s consumer sentiment index for October. The consensus estimate is for an 88.5 reading.
