How to turn one basic shirt into three unique looks

The white button-up shirt is a must-have for everyone’s closet. It might seem drab and old-fashioned, but it’s actually extremely versatile.

In The Know’s resident fashion expert Lisa Azcona demonstrated three very different ways you can wear the shirt and elevate your look from run-of-the-mill to remarkable.

1. The one-shoulder

For your first look, neatly tuck in the collar, and only put one of your arms through a sleeve. Grab the hanging sleeve and some excess fabric on the opposite side of your shirt and tie a knot in the middle. Adjust it a bit, and you’ve got a fabulous, asymmetrical top.

Pair it with some flirty, dangly earrings and it becomes the perfect outfit for a date or a cocktail party.

2. The backless top

For the second look, put the shirt on backward, and tuck in the collar and the bottom half of the shirt. Tie the shirt with a double knot in the back. This top is super sophisticated in the front with a fun surprise in the back.

We recommend adding a statement necklace, and with that, you have the perfect look to transition from a day at work to a night on the town.

3. The off-shoulder

Tuck in the collar and use the top button to secure the shirt, then tuck in the extra fabric in the back and make one knot in the front.

This style is so ridiculously cute, you’ll be shocked it’s the same shirt you started with. Gold hoops are a must for this outfit, which is great for a hot day at the beach or a rooftop.

To best pull off these three looks, Azcona recommends using a shirt that’s a bit bigger than your usual size. Follow her step-by-step instructions for each style by watching the video above.
