There's new political drama all about uncovering a big conspiracy amidst an election heading to the big screen.

The Independent stars Succession's Brian Cox and Anne Boleyn lead Jodie Turner-Smith front and centre, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

With all the highly charged political drama we've all been forced to witness in real life over the last few years, it might be a nice change to sit back watch a good film about it – and it does sound pretty interesting.

Set in the final weeks of the most consequential presidential election in history, The Independent follows an idealistic young journalist (Turner-Smith) who teams up with her idol (Cox) to uncover a conspiracy that places the fate of the election, and the country, in their hands.

Emmy-nominated director Amy Rice (By The People: The Election of Barack Obama) is at the helm and will be working from a script by Evan Parter.

"Brian is not only a wonderful actor, he has global appeal and paired with Jodie's strong screen presence and talent, The Independent looks like one of the strongest titles of this market," said O'Shea, CEO of The Exchange, who is financing the feature.

Cox will be returning for season three of Succession next month after being previously delayed because of COVID-19 filming restrictions.

Upcoming episodes have been given a synopsis of: "Ambushed by his rebellious son Kendall (Jeremy Strong) at the end of season two, Logan Roy (Cox) begins season three in a perilous position. Scrambling to secure familial, political, and financial alliances, tensions rise as a bitter corporate battle threatens to turn into a family civil war."

Succession returns in October on HBO in the US and Sky Atlantic and NOW in the UK.
