Suntastic! Parts of the UK on course for hottest day of the year

Sun hats and sun cream at the ready - today could be the hottest day of the year so far.

Temperatures in some parts of the UK could reach as high as 29C (84.2F).

They would only have to pass 28.3C (82.9F) to be the year's hottest day - the previous hottest was 2 June - and the warmest 13 June on record.

Met Office meteorologist Alex Burkill said: "We are going to get close.

"It is unlikely we are going to get over 30C (86F) - it's going to be touch and go.

"It will be close as to whether we get to 28.3C.

"If we don't, there's a chance we could get even higher temperatures on Monday when we could get 29C or 30C.

"The top temperatures are going to be towards the London area, but the heat is going to be widespread. It's not just confined to the South East."

The northwest of Scotland, however, will only have temperatures in the high teens and will by cloudy with some outbreaks of rain, he added.

On Monday, southern parts of the UK will continue seeing warm temperatures while the north will cool down.

It comes after Saturday saw a top temperature of 24.8C at Kew Gardens in London, with 24.6C at Heathrow and St James's Park.
