Lavonte David says Tom Brady told a teammate to stop crying about reaching the Super Bowl

Tom Brady is a consummate competitor. He’s headed to his 10th Super Bowl on Sunday, and he knows what it takes to succeed on the NFL’s biggest stage.

But has he forgotten how it feels to make one of your first Super Bowls? According to Brady’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers teammate Lavonte David, he has.

David told an amazing story on the “All Things Covered” podcast about Brady in the locker room after the Bucs won the NFC title. Apparently Brady didn’t think winning that game warranted any happy tears, and told an unnamed teammate who was overcome with emotion to cut it out.

“When I realized that it was real — when I realized all other stuff don’t really matter unless it’s the Super Bowl was like after we won the NFC championship … I’m geeked up and I guess somebody was crying, and I heard him [Brady], just like, ‘What the f*** you crying for? We’re not done yet.'”

You heard Brady: Wipe away those tears and stifle your emotions!

To cut Brady a tiny bit of slack, after nine (almost 10) Super Bowl appearances, this is old hat to him. He’s done this so many times that it’s probably difficult to get excited until he’s holding the Lombardi Trophy. But that’s no reason to stomp on your teammate’s emotions!

Have a heart, Tom! You were once a Super Bowl first-timer! You once felt exactly what your unnamed teammate felt! Try to remember the happiness, the awe, the wonder of helping your team make it to the biggest game of the entire season. Try to remember the pride, the euphoria, the delight of being one of the last two teams standing in the entire NFL.

Or he could just keep on being Tom Brady. He didn’t get to where he is by rowing a boat on a river of his own tears, after all.
