Supermarket Income REIT (LON:SUPR) investors are sitting on a loss of 11% if they invested a year ago

Most people feel a little frustrated if a stock they own goes down in price. But in the short term the market is a voting machine, and the share price movements may not reflect the underlying business performance. So while the Supermarket Income REIT plc (LON:SUPR) share price is down 15% in the last year, the total return to shareholders (which includes dividends) was -11%. And that total return actually beats the market decline of 13%. At least the damage isn't so bad if you look at the last three years, since the stock is down 2.9% in that time. The share price has dropped 20% in three months.

As well as measuring the share price return, investors should also consider the total shareholder return (TSR). The TSR incorporates the value of any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings, along with any dividends, based on the assumption that the dividends are reinvested. It's fair to say that the TSR gives a more complete picture for stocks that pay a dividend. We note that for Supermarket Income REIT the TSR over the last 1 year was -11%, which is better than the share price return mentioned above. The dividends paid by the company have thusly boosted the total shareholder return.

A Different Perspective

While it's never nice to take a loss, Supermarket Income REIT shareholders can take comfort that , including dividends,their trailing twelve month loss of 11% wasn't as bad as the market loss of around 13%.
