Swimmer Ryan Lochte Swaps Pool For The Dance Floor

The US swimmer Ryan Lochte – who admits he “overexaggerated" a story about being robbed and held at gunpoint during the Rio Olympics – is joining the American version of Strictly Come Dancing.

The 32-year-old, who says he wants to "move forward" following the controversy in Brazil, will again be scrutinised by the public - but this time on the quality of his Ballroom and Latin as he takes part in Dancing With the Stars.

The swimmer, who has 12 Olympic medals, was dropped by four major sponsors following the incident in Rio.

Lochte had initially said he and three teammates were pulled over in their taxi by gunmen posing as police who then robbed them.

However, the group faced an angry backlash after police accused Lochte of fabricating the story to cover up vandalising a petrol station toilet.

He has since been charged with making a false statement to police. He has not said whether he plans to return to Brazil.

Appearing on "Good Morning America", Lochte was asked whether he felt he had embarrassed the United States.

"I think it's everyone blowing this way out of proportion," he replied.

"I think that's what happened."

He also referred to his claim that a gun was held to his head.

"Like I said, I did lie about that one part," he said.

"I take full responsibility. I'm human. I made a mistake. A very big mistake.

"Everyone has got to be sick and tired about hearing about this. I just want to move forward."

Some of those appearing alongside him in Dancing With the Stars include the rapper and actor Vanilla Ice, Brady Bunch star Maureen McCormick, and Olympic gymnast Laurie Hernandez.
