Yahoo Finance Family files lawsuit against Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim after 2019 fatal crash
The family of a man who was struck and killed by an SUV driven by Jim Boeheim nearly two years ago filed a lawsuit against the longtime Syracuse coach on Monday, according to Syracuse.com.
The family of Jorge Jimenez alleged that Boeheim was “negligent, reckless and wanton” in his actions in February 2019. The coach was cleared of any wrongdoing for his role in the crash a month after the accident.
The four-page lawsuit was filed on Monday in Onondaga County Supreme Court and is seeking an unspecified settlement, per the Associated Press.
“The collision involving decedent was caused by the negligence of defendant James Boeheim, who was traveling at a high rate of speed and/or was otherwise negligent in the operation of the vehicle,” Albany lawyer Terence O’Connor wrote, according to Syracuse.com.

Boeheim was driving home on Interstate 690 after Syracuse’s win against Louisville in 2019 when he ran into Jimenez.
Jimenez was in a car that had crashed into a guardrail earlier and was blocking two of the three lanes. Boeheim struck and killed Jimemez, who had exited the car, with a university SUV while attempting to avoid the wreckage.
Boeheim was speeding just before the crash, going 66 mph in a 55 mph zone. He did not have any alcohol or drugs in his system, and an investigation determined that the crash likely would have been deadly even if Boeheim was going the speed limit.
He was later cleared of all wrongdoing, and no charges were filed.
Both Boeheim and the university declined to comment about the new lawsuit to Syracuse.com.
The 75-year-old has been with the Orange since 1976, and is one of the best coaches in the history of the sport. Boeheim has compiled a 1,065-399 overall record in his 44 seasons with the program, reached the NCAA tournament 34 times and won a national title in 2003. He was inducted into the College Basketball Hall of Fame in 2005, and has the second-most wins among any active Division I men’s coach behind Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski.
