Taco Bell customers are going all out to 'save' a beloved menu item: 'Don't do this to us'

Taco Bell fans have launched a massive campaign to “save” one of the chain’s most iconic items.

In September, the fast-food franchise announced a series of menu cuts that, depending on your love for pico de gallo, may have been pretty heartbreaking.

Pico de gallo aside, the most painful announcement seemed to involve Mexican Pizza. The dish, which is essentially a large, round taco topped with pizza sauce, tomatoes and cheese, will leave the menu in early November.

That news didn’t go over well with Taco Bell obsessives, some of whom created a Change.org petition to stop the item’s removal. As of October 13, that petition has more than 100,000 signatures.

The campaign calls fast food lovers to “band together, show support, and save the Mexican Pizza.”

“I truly, truly believe we have made an impact. That we have made it known that we love the Mexican Pizza and we don’t want it to go,” Krish Jagirdar, who created the petition, wrote in an update. “I think that the executives at Yum! Brands and Taco Bell have heard us, but we need to keep going.”

Plenty of signatories echoed Jagirdar’s sentiment, leaving comments that called the Mexican Pizza their “favorite” item.

“On my hardest days, there is no better fix than a Mexican Pizza and ice cold Baja Blast. Please don’t do this to us Taco Bell,” one commenter wrote.

“You’ve probably already lost customers from the past things you’ve removed. You’re just digging yourselves a deeper hole,” another wrote.

“Stop getting rid of all the good stuff!” another added.

Jagirdar’s petition clearly has plenty of support, but it’s unclear if it will do anything to change Taco Bell’s mind. The company has been simplifying its menu since July, citing a desire to streamline operations amid the pandemic.

Back then, the chain cut the majority of its vegetarian items, plus the cult-favorite Quesarito. Shredded chicken items are also leaving the menu, along with pico de gallo and (for now) the Mexican Pizza.

It’s worth noting, though, that the chain has promised that it’s adding plenty of new menu items to help fill the void — including a $1 Chicken Chipotle Melt.
