Talking Point: Do you see the London ULEZ expansion as a historic move?

Mayor Sadiq Khan has described today’s ULEZ expansion as a “landmark” for London, praising the capital’s bid to tackle toxic air pollution.

Khan said the impact of the expansion, which sees ULEZ stretch into the suburbs, was equivalent to taking 60,000 vehicles off the roads, with levels of transport-related nitrogen oxides expected to fall by 30 per cent.

Although 87 per cent of vehicles in the new zone now meet ULEZ standards, 110,000 motorists are expected to have to pay the charge per day.

These figures would generate a daily income for Transport for London of almost £1.4 million in levies alone, but some have demanded a “soft launch” of the scheme, with motorists unable to pay the charge given a month-long amnesty from the £160 fine.
