Talking Point: What do you think the future holds for the Labour Party?

The Labour Party is facing a bitter civil war today after its Hartlepool by-election loss, in which Jill Mortimer defeated Dr Paul Williams by 6,940 votes.

Sir Keir Starmer’s leadership has already been called into question by Corbyn allies such as John McDonnell, Diane Abbott and Richard Burgon.

But Sir Keir has vowed to steer further away from the Corbynite policies which led the party to such a disastrous election result in 2019.

Shadow Communities Secretary Steve Reed told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme: “We have a breach of trust between too much of the British electorate and the Labour Party, and we haven’t done enough to repair it over the past year.”

A reshuffle is to be expected, but Starmer’s leadership is secure for now. So what do you think the future might hold for Labour? Let us know in the comments below.

Yesterday’s Talking Point: Do you think Prime Ministers are paid enough?

Yesterday we asked for your thoughts on the PM’s pay after Boris Johnson’s flat refurbishment scandal.

Opinions were fairly mixed: “sunflowerbrenny” said they would like to see “30k a year,” and “johnnyalanjames” agreed: “He earns far too much. MPs generally should be lower paid. It would encourage people who care about the country to get into politics, instead of people who are greedy for power.”

“27_craig,” meanwhile, thought that the wage was too much for Johnson specifically: “It’s not really a lot given the hours and responsiblity, but for him, it’s way too much. Besides the money they make afterwards will more than make up for it.”

But “domenico_strano_ disagreed, arguing that “it is so embarrassing that the PM has to beg for money to have his/her flat to be refurbished. Utterly disgraceful.”
