Unless you borrow money to invest, the potential losses are limited. But when you pick a company that is really flourishing, you can make more than 100%. For example, the Tanger Factory Outlet Centers, Inc. (NYSE:SKT) share price has soared 179% in the last year. Most would be very happy with that, especially in just one year! On top of that, the share price is up 23% in about a quarter. This could be related to the recent financial results, released recently - you can catch up on the most recent data by reading our company report. On the other hand, longer term shareholders have had a tougher run, with the stock falling 16% in three years.

To quote Buffett, 'Ships will sail around the world but the Flat Earth Society will flourish. There will continue to be wide discrepancies between price and value in the marketplace...' One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).

During the last year, Tanger Factory Outlet Centers actually saw its earnings per share drop 116%. This was, in part, due to extraordinary items impacting earning in the last twelve months.

So we don't think that investors are paying too much attention to EPS. Indeed, when EPS is declining but the share price is up, it often means the market is considering other factors.

We note that the most recent dividend payment is higher than the payment a year ago, so that may have assisted the share price. Income-seeking investors probably helped bid up the stock price.

What About Dividends?

When looking at investment returns, it is important to consider the difference between total shareholder return (TSR) and share price return. The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. It's fair to say that the TSR gives a more complete picture for stocks that pay a dividend. In the case of Tanger Factory Outlet Centers, it has a TSR of 185% for the last year. That exceeds its share price return that we previously mentioned. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!

A Different Perspective

It's nice to see that Tanger Factory Outlet Centers shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 185% over the last year. Of course, that includes the dividend. Notably the five-year annualised TSR loss of 6% per year compares very unfavourably with the recent share price performance. We generally put more weight on the long term performance over the short term, but the recent improvement could hint at a (positive) inflection point within the business. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. Case in point: We've spotted 4 warning signs for Tanger Factory Outlet Centers you should be aware of, and 1 of them is a bit concerning.
