Putting Krispy Kreme's new glazed donut Oreo to the test -- and it packs a (sweet) punch

Krispy Kreme has a new doughnut — and it probably pairs well with milk.

This week, the doughnut company and coffeehouse chain announced it collaborated with Oreo (MDLZ) to create a new Oreo Cookie Glaze made with real Oreo Cookie pieces.

Now through April 18, Krispy Kreme customers can purchase two iterations of the new flavor: classic and an "over-the top" version.

The first option, stuffed with 'Cookies and Kreme' filling and coated with icing and cookie crumbles, might seem like a decadent choice, but it's the latter that takes the "over-the top" description to a whole new level. The Oreo Cookie Over-The-Top Doughnut features all the same elements as the classic but tops it off with extra filling, icing and an oversized Oreo Cookie wafer.

Yahoo Finance had the chance to taste test both sweet treats, and gave an impressive 5/5 stars for the "over the top" version — citing the giant wafer's crunch and (more subtle than expected) sweetness of the filling as positive elements to the doughnut.

"We’ve taken everything fans love about Oreo Cookies and ‘glazeifed’ it," Krispy Kreme chief marketing officer Dave Skena said in a company statement.

Although Krispy Kreme has featured Oreos on its doughnuts before, the partnership marks the first time in Krispy Kreme's 84-year history that it has collaborated with another brand to create a new glaze.

In addition to the doughnuts, the company also added a new drink: the Oreo Mocha Chiller — an espresso-based frozen drink blended with Oreo chunks, and topped with whipped cream and cookie crumbs.

Krispy Kreme has been in the news recently for other reasons. The donut purveyor came under fire after it announced plans to give one free donut to anyone who received a COVID-19 vaccine shot. Social media users pointed out that America's obesity crisis as a prime risk category for the coronavirus, but CEO Mike Tattersfield defended the decision in an interview with Yahoo Finance.

"We're a sweet treat company, [and] if folks don't want to visit a donut shop, they don't have to," he said at the time.

Rebutting the growing critique, Tattersfield added that if "folks that want to get a vaccine, if they decide to combine a Krispy Kreme pickup [for] a doughnut, they can. That's how we look at it.... generosity."
