Teacher stuns students with virtual field trip to the zoo: ‘This is amazing’

A Seattle kindergarten teacher went viral after taking his class on a virtual field trip to the zoo.

Garrett Talcott went to Woodland Park Zoo with a face mask, backpack and laptop. He has been teaching virtually since the pandemic lockdown began last year and decided to take advantage of his local resources. He headed to the zoo with his partner Michael, who recorded a video of the virtual field trip that has earned over 875,000 views on TikTok.

“We do Friday fundays with dance parties, experiments, etc. and this week we were studying animal habitats so I said why not go to the zoo?” Talcott told In The Know.

In one of the two zoo TikToks, he showed his class animals like a tapir, a rhino (that caused much fanfare) and an orangutan. He asked them for feedback and made sure to hold his laptop camera up so they could get a clear view.

“This is a great trip!” one of the children said over Zoom. When he asked his students how the field trip was, they replied, “Amazing!”

TikTok users praised the teacher for going the extra mile for his students.

“Such a creative way to enhance the learning experience,” someone wrote.

“You are a gift to kids!” another commented.

“This is amazing! Your students are so lucky to have you,” a third user said.

Talcott’s class has 27 students. While his school, Ella Baker Elementary, doesn’t normally coordinate a trip to the zoo, he thought he would take advantage of living 10 minutes away from one.

“The thought was rather than showing videos, let’s bring the zoo to the students. Teachers are the experts in their areas. How great to bring them to the zoo and learn directly from zookeepers,” Talcott told Today.
