Protests in Holland against lockdown measures descended into violence as rioters clashed with police.

In Eindhoven, protesters pelted officers with stones at a banned demonstration against a new 9pm curfew.

They responded with tear gas and water cannon. Some protesters threw fireworks, looted supermarkets and smashed shop windows.

Police in central Amsterdam also used a water cannon to disperse protesters next to the Van Gogh Museum.

More than 100 people have been arrested. It comes after a Covid-19 testing centre was set alight on Saturday evening in the northern village of Urk.

France probably needs to move into a third lockdown, perhaps as early as the February school holidays, because of the circulation of the new variants, the government’s top medical adviser Jean-Francois Delfraissy said.

In Mexico president Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, 67, tweeted he had tested positive for Covid-19 and was receiving medical treatment but had mild symptoms.
