Tesco’s UK and Ireland chief executive Charles Wilson is stepping down from his role after being diagnosed with throat cancer earlier this year.

The supermarket said in an announcement to the stock exchange on Tuesday that Mr Wilson had received the diagnosis after an operation to remove his tonsils in April.

He underwent daily radiotherapy in May and June, and the company said: “The good news is that Charles has responded very well to the treatment and all the signs are that the treatment has been successful.”

However, Tesco added: “Given the nature of the illness and the need for Charles to remain vigilant in his recuperation.” The group has decided that he will step down from his role and from the PLC board, but will remain on the executive committee.

Mr Wilson will “focus on leading the Booker business, continuing to deliver the cost synergies and driving the growth agenda set out in the merger agreement”, and will contribute to the broader Tesco UK strategy, the group said. He will continue to report to Tesco CEO Dave Lewis.

Jason Tarry, currently group chief product officer, will become the CEO of the UK & Ireland business.
