'The Masked Singer': All the best guesses ahead of the grand final

Who will be unmasked as Robin, Sausage and Badger? (ITV)
Who will be unmasked as Robin, Sausage and Badger? (ITV)

The Masked Singer fans are set for a bittersweet moment on ITV this Saturday as the remaining three characters are unmasked in the grand final.

Sausage, Badger and Robin will each perform in their costumes for the last time as the judges (and all of us watching at home) make our last guesses on who they are. One of them will also be crowned champion.

So far we've seen everyone from a Brit Award winner to an ex-Bake Off presenter unmasked, and the jury is still well and truly out on the identities of the finalists.

Thanks to some fantastic detective work though, we have got clues to go on. Here are all the best theories ahead of Saturday's series finale...

The newspaper print on Sausage's costume has changed each week (ITV)

(ITV)

The best guesses: Sheridan Smith or Joss Stone

Why? Sausage’s first VT included plenty of clues that pointed towards Billie Piper, with fans spotting one of her famous song titles on a menu for a food van called ‘Billie’s Burgers’ – but we reckon these were all red herrings.

Since Sausage has belted out a few more tunes, their seriously impressive vocals have left plenty of fans convinced it’s Sheridan Smith behind the mask.

Sheridan Smith opens up about mental breakdown: 'My life was falling apart'

Behind the mask? Fans think Sheridan is the secretive singer

Other clues have backed this up too, including her reveal about enjoying “a couple of beers and potato snacks” (a possible nod to Two Pints Of Lager And A Packet Of Crisps) while in a game of Two Truths And A Lie, Sausage also said her hair colour is “certified by law”. As Jonathan Ross soon pointed out, Smith previously appeared in the stage version of Legally Blonde.

As a result, we spent a long time completely convinced this was Sheridan... until the emergence of the Joss Stone theory.

Stone and Sausage both own campervans and love travelling, and there have been some potential references to the former’s songs, including fish and chips served in 'Snakes and Ladders'-printed paper – but it doesn’t end there.

ITV attempted to throw viewers off the scent with some sporty clues (ITV)

(ITV)

The best guess: Aston Merrygold

Why? Loads of fans guessed that Aston Merrygold was behind this bold and weirdly slick costume almost straight away and despite ITV’s attempts to throw us off the scent, we still think this guess is the correct one.

There have been references to Strictly Come Dancing – which Merrygold competed in back in 2017 – and also a nod to ‘Flying Without Wings’, the track JLS performed with Westlife on The X Factor in 2008.

Clues which hinted at a more sporty past followed but as plenty of Twitter users pointed out, Merrygold loves a kickabout and even played in 2012’s Soccer Aid match.

In another VT Robin said “This Robin might have a red breast, but he’s also known for being blue” and as JLS devotees will know, blue was Merrygold’s colour in the group.

Robin has also performed Justin Timberlake’s ‘Can’t Stop The Feeling’, which Merrygold danced to on Strictly.

Is that.... Ne-Yo? (ITV)

(ITV)

The best guess: Ne-Yo

Why? Badger is definitely one of the characters who has proven seriously tough to figure out and genuine guesses so far have included everyone from Lord Of The Rings’ Andy Serkis to rocker Brian May and ‘Mysterious Girl’ singer Peter Andre.

At first, Badger had a slightly bizarre accent and different singing voice but as the weeks have gone on, it certainly seems he’s American and in possession of a fantastic voice.

Badger is a friend of Barbra Streisand’s, who Neyo has duetted with, and began his career in a role that didn’t include fame – much like the songwriter-turned-singer.

There have also been loads of references to Ne-Yo’s favourite accessory, a great hat, and “coding”. Not only does Ne-Yo share his name with Keanu Reeves’ The Matrix character but he’s also previously invested in a coding school.

It’s admittedly a wild theory, but we’ve allowed ourselves to be convinced.
