Battlestar Galactica fans can rest easy – the planned new series of the space saga will not be a remake, but ‘a new story in the mythology’.

Sam Esmail, the creator of Mr Robot, who was recently announced to be working on the new project, has gone on record with a tweet.

“BSG fans, this will NOT be a remake of the amazing series [Ron Moore] launched because... why mess with perfection? Instead, we’ll explore a new story within the mythology while staying true to the spirit of Battlestar. So say we all!” he wrote.

Deadline adds that Esmail is 'a huge fan of BSG', so it would appear that the show is in good hands.

The series will be made for the new Peacock streaming service, set to be launched next year by NBCUniversal, which owns the Battlestar Galactica franchise.

Originally created by legendary TV producer Glen A. Larson, the show first hit screens in the 80s, telling the story of the last of the human race adrift in space hoping to return to their home planet of Earth, but pursued to near extermination by android race the Cylons.

It was then reimagined in 2003 by Ronald D. Moore and David Eick, before becoming a four-season mini-series which concluded in 2009.

It took in themes of the war on terror and rising fears of radicalisation, and received widespread acclaim, though some viewers were disappointed with the series' conclusion.

However, it spawned two other spin-offs, Caprica, a prequel series which ran for just one season, and web series Blood & Chrome, released in 2012.

Esmail has received plaudits for Mr Robot, his conspiracy thriller which helped launch the career of Rami Malek.

A fourth and final season of the show begins next month.
