The latest episode of The Repair Shop has been dubbed “an hour of therapy” by viewers who were left in floods of tears.

The show has aired since 2017 but as many of us have sought out comforting programmes during the past year, its popularity has grown significantly.

Each episode sees people bring much-loved family heirlooms to be restored and Wednesday night’s show saw an elderly woman, Rose Werner, present a box previously owned by her late husband.

Rose explained that her husband, Jim, brought the leather box to the UK when he was rescued from Europe through the Kindertransport in World War Two.

Expert Suzie Fletcher then set to work restoring the prized possession to its former glory and when it was time to see the finished item, Werner became understandably emotional.

“I can’t believe it,” she said, as she tearfully looked at the box, opening it and exclaiming: “Oh I don’t believe it. I don’t believe it. I’ve never seen it look like that.”

Turning to her sister, Werner said: “It’s Jim. While I’ve got that I’ve always got Jim.”

By the end of the scene, it wasn’t just Werner who was in tears as many viewers revealed they had also been left reaching for the tissues:

The episode also featured Chantal Taylor, 31, who lost both her parents within eight months of each other in 2018.

Taylor presented the experts with an antique Italian chair she found while clearing out their home.

While the piece of furniture had long since fallen into disrepair, the experts worked their magic and left Taylor stunned.

“What they did is more than I could possibly have dreamt,” she said. “My mother would have loved it and would have been amazed that it’s been brought back to life."

The Repair Shop is available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
