Third Culture Bakery makes sweets with Indonesian and Taiwanese-centered flavors

Sweets are among the many things that can put a smile on anyone’s face. Third Culture Bakery brings together two different backgrounds and infuses them into tasty pastries.

Created in 2014, partners Chef Sam Butarbutar and Wenter Shyu made their tasty Mochi Muffin to kick off their brand, showcasing their Indonesian and Taiwanese backgrounds. They’ve since expanded into several other flavored pastries, including the Third Culture Bakery Matcha Mochi Muffins, the Ube Mochi Muffin and the Black Sesame Mochi Muffin.

With all of the muffins, you can score a half-dozen box for $24 or a one-dozen box for $48. Additionally, Third Culture Bakery sells a variety of oolong teas and gift sets. Plus, the bakery even has its own chocolate bars, which are so popular that they’re currently out of stock. To pair with your muffins, the bakery also carries a homemade matcha tea, roasted matcha, ceremonial matcha and a matcha whisk to whip it all up.

Original Mochi Muffin, $24-$48

The muffin that made the brand what it is today comes from Chef Sam’s mother, who made this Indonesian dessert at home. Chef Sam has transformed the original recipe into a sweet treat with the perfect balance of a crunchy outer and a soft inner layer, made from a house-made mochiko rice flour. Packed with flavors of caramel, brown butter and coconut, this yummy muffin is topped off with black and white Japanese sesame seeds.

Matcha Mochi Muffins, $24-$48

If ultra-sweet isn’t your vibe, the Matcha Mochi Muffins might be your jam. This chewy delight is covered in flavors of butter and matcha from the brand’s own line of Uli Matcha. Each muffin is drizzled with matcha chocolate stripes and a sprinkle of strawberries to make it look even more beautiful on a plate.

Popular in South Asian desserts, ube, a purple sweet potato, is the star of this muffin. Expect coconut and vanilla flavors all throughout. Cooked with coconut milk and fresh pandan leaves, the muffin has a chewy inside. Plus, ube chocolate stripes add a nice finish to this delicious treat.

Black Sesame Mochi Muffin, $24 – $48

The Black Sesame Mochi Muffin uses black sesame seeds from an 11-generation-old family farm in Nagoya, Japan. This particular dish is unique because it takes 72 hours to grind the seeds into a paste, in addition to the mochiko rice flour used to build the muffin. It’s got a flavorful profile similar to that of almond butter and features delicious white chocolate drops and sprinkled raspberries to top it off.
