Those who invested in Fluor (NYSE:FLR) three years ago are up 98%

While Fluor Corporation (NYSE:FLR) shareholders are probably generally happy, the stock hasn't had particularly good run recently, with the share price falling 29% in the last quarter. But over three years, the returns would have left most investors smiling In the last three years the share price is up, 98%: better than the market.

Now it's worth having a look at the company's fundamentals too, because that will help us determine if the long term shareholder return has matched the performance of the underlying business.

View our latest analysis for Fluor

Fluor wasn't profitable in the last twelve months, it is unlikely we'll see a strong correlation between its share price and its earnings per share (EPS). Arguably revenue is our next best option. When a company doesn't make profits, we'd generally expect to see good revenue growth. That's because it's hard to be confident a company will be sustainable if revenue growth is negligible, and it never makes a profit.

In the last 3 years Fluor saw its revenue shrink by 8.2% per year. Despite the lack of revenue growth, the stock has returned 25%, compound, over three years. If the company is cutting costs profitability could be on the horizon, but the revenue decline is a prima facie concern.

A Different Perspective

Fluor shareholders are down 6.9% for the year, but the market itself is up 0.8%. However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. However, the loss over the last year isn't as bad as the 8% per annum loss investors have suffered over the last half decade. We would want clear information suggesting the company will grow, before taking the view that the share price will stabilize. If you would like to research Fluor in more detail then you might want to take a look at whether insiders have been buying or selling shares in the company.
