TikTok Is Going Crazy for This Simple Sleep Hack

Anyone who has trouble drifting off at night will be aware that making yourself a brew can often make a bad situation worse, or so we thought.

Turns out, we were all just making the wrong brew. A TikTok video, which has now amassed millions of views, shows how drinking lettuce water – yes, just plain old romaine and hot water – can send you off to the land of nod in a matter of minutes.

The video shows Tiktok user, Shapla Hoque, trying lettuce water for the first time. "Sis, don't sleep, so I'm going to try it out," she says to introduce her experiment.

What she ends up with is as simple as it sounds – a mix of washed lettuce leaves and hot water – but because the prospect of drinking just lettuce water doesn't exactly appeal to Hoque, she adds a peppermint teabag to her concoction, but says, "peppermint doesn't make me sleepy, so it won't change anything."

Hoque says the final product "tastes like nothing", but a few minutes later she does feel "slightly dazey". "Not hella sleepy, like knockout, but I do feel a bit sleepy," she adds.

A few minutes later, Hoque provides a further update and this time she's on her way to dreamland. "Lettuce has crack because your sis is gone," she says.

While we're sure Hoque's science experiment was conducted under the strictest of conditions, we can't judge this sleep hack on her testimony alone.

Luckily though, science also claims that lettuce water is good for catching Zs. Numerous studies have noted that lettuce, and particularly romaine, contains a phytonutrient, called lactucarium, which is said to induce sleep and relieve pain.

A 2017 study, published in the journal Food Science and Biotechnology, reported how lettuce is known to have a "sedative-hypnotic property".

That particular study concluded that, "lettuce, especially romaine lettuce, is an interesting and cheap source of sleep-potentiating material and antioxidant polyphenols."

So there you have it. Add lettuce to your shopping basket if you struggle to get a good night's sleep.
