TikTok's now-infamous pasta recipe leaves users 'annoyed': 'It literally looks unsettling'

If you thought lockdown cooking crazes would die with the bread-making and coffee-whipping trends, you were sadly mistaken.

A baked feta pasta recipe, which food blogger @feelgoodfoodie shared in the post that has garnered the most views, has been taking over users’ For You pages. It’s allegedly the reason grocery stores in Finland ran out of feta cheese.

How do you make the TikTok baked feta cheese pasta?

The recipe is easy enough. Here’s all you need:

  • 8 ounces of pasta

  • 2 pints of cherry tomatoes

  • 1 8-ounce block of feta cheese

  • 1/2 cup of olive oil

  • 1/4 teaspoon of sea salt

  • 1/4 teaspoon of black pepper

  • 2 garlic cloves

  • 1/4 cup of basil

In most videos, the process is simple. You just fill a tray with tomatoes, olive oil and all your various seasonings, then drop that massive hunk of feta cheese on top. Bake that at 400 degrees for 35 minutes.

From there, simply dump your cooked pasta on top of the dish and mix it well.

Why are TikTok users frustrated with the recipe?

Perhaps the recipe has gone viral because it seems incredibly easy, yet entirely over-the-top at the same time. Why are there so many tomatoes involved? And who needs that much cheese?

Regardless of what makes the recipe so intoxicating, it’s become annoying to users who can’t seem to escape it.

“This is the tenth time I’ve seen this video today,” one user commented.

“Please leave me alone,” another said.

“I’m annoyed with the number of times I’ve seen it but it really does look amazing,” a third wrote.

“What makes it worse is that it literally looks unsettling,” another remarked.

Nearly every video tagged #bakedfetapasta mentions grocery stores in Finland. It’s safe to say it’s a little repetitive.

Who created the original TikTok baked feta cheese pasta recipe?

There’s also a bit of drama brewing over who the original creator of the recipe is.

Jenni Häyrinen, a so-called “food artist” who claims to be the originator of the recipe in 2019, said on Instagram she was the first to coin the formula for “#uunifetapasta” — which means “baked feta pasta” in Finnish. She admitted that food blogger Tiiu Piret made a similar recipe before her, but it did not go viral.

“Recipes are hardly ever totally original: it’s likely that someone has made a similar thing somewhere in the world,” she wrote. “The point is that not all recipes go viral even if they are similar, #uunifetapasta did for which I am very grateful.”

Regardless of who started it, we all have the power to finish it — by either making it, or smashing that “not interested” button on TikTok when someone starts talking about Finnish grocery stores again.
