TikTok is amazed by this old PlayStation 1 trick: 'My life was a lie all this time!'

Who knew Tomb Raider was such a bop?

TikTok users have been delighted by a video that shows how to turn old PlayStation 1 games into music albums.

Retro video game store DKOldies posted a video on its TikTok account describing how certain PS1 games can also double as music CDs. The user behind the account demonstrated this with a copy of the original Tomb Raider. By inserting the disc into a laptop, the user was able to play song tracks and various audio assets from the game.

Some viewers were shocked by this. In an age where most media — including video games — is completely digital, multimedia hacks like this are few and far between.

“I never knew that!” one commenter said. “My life was a lie all this time!”

“I WAS RIGHT NOW YRS OLD WHEN I FIGURED THIS OUT” another user wrote.

But for some other users, this was old news. Millennial gamers have long been aware of this trick and seeing it again was a reminder of simpler times.

“We put everything in a CD player back in the day,” a commenter said.

“I’m 37 and I’ve known this since the 90s,” another said.

So just how does this PlayStation wizardry work? Well, it’s because developers sometimes added in-game sounds in the CDDA format. CDDA is the format used by music and audio albums, so naturally, a PS1 game with CDDA tracks will play back audio on a CD player without any trouble.

And this isn’t just restricted to PS1 games. It applied to most gaming platforms that used CDs such as the Dreamcast, Saturn and older PC games before the technology shifted to Blu-ray discs and purely digital releases.

Give it a shot if you still have an old CD player and you need some background music while cooking or doing laundry. There’s some life in these old games.
