TikToker exposes alleged 'deceptive' marketing ploy used for popular makeup palette: 'That's messed up'

A TikToker’s warning about a makeup palette she bought from Walmart is stirring up controversy on the app.

Beauty TikTok hosts a plethora of beauty hackssome safe, some not. Another helpful aspect of this corner of the internet is all the countless discoveries and warnings users have shared about common makeup products.

In this instance, TikToker Bethany Fischer shared a “quick little lesson” on what she called “deceptive advertising.”

“What I have here is a palette I bought today at Walmart from the Wet n Wild section — specifically their eye shadow section,” Fischer said in her TikTok. “[But] when you come down here [on the back], you see this little chart that has an asterisk next to the 7 [shade]. Follow the asterisk and it says, ‘Not for use around eyes.'”

“What you’ll also notice is that nowhere on here does it say this is an eyeshadow palette,” she added. “It says ’10-pan shadow palette.’ This is because they want to be able to sell this to you, as an eyeshadow palette, and legally cover themselves.”

The shade in question is a deep burgundy color, which likely means it contains a red pigment that can irritate the eyes. Wet n Wild is also a vegan makeup brand, meaning it uses red and pink pigments that could potentially stain skin as well.

Commenters on Fischer’s video claimed that other companies — like NYX, Urban Decay and Colourpop — use similar warnings and wording on their packaging.

“I’m going to be checking everything now,” one user replied.

“That’s messed up,” another added.

“I have the same palette and saw that,” a TikToker chimed in. “Why is it even in there? And if it’s not eye shadows, then what is it?”
