TikToker’s simple hack will extend your iPhone battery life

A techie TikToker has got the perfect little-known hack to extend your iPhone’s battery life.

The longer you have your iPhone, the less functional it can be. We all can handle normal wear and tear, like a few scratches on the screen, but when the battery starts to die too fast and too frequently, it can feel like your iPhone is on its last leg.

TikToker @kadama shares his favorite iPhone hacks with 1.9 million users. Here’s his tip for making your beloved iPhone last that much longer.

“Go to ‘General’ settings,” @kadama said. “Tap ‘Background App Refresh’ and turn it off. Then go to your ‘Battery’ settings, tap ‘Battery Health’ and turn on ‘Optimized Battery Charging.’ Now, your battery will last much longer.”

Apple’s ‘Optimized Battery Charging‘ is available on iOS 13 and later. The feature allows your iPhone to learn your daily charging habits to enhance your battery’s lifespan by minimizing the amount of time your iPhone remains fully charged.

As lithium-ion batteries chemically age, they can’t hold the same amount of charge as they were able to initially. Factors like the battery’s temperature history and charging pattern cause chemical aging. Thus, reducing the battery’s maximum capacity can help expand its lifetime.

“When the feature is enabled, your iPhone will delay charging past 80% in certain situations,” according to Apple. “So ‘Optimized Battery Charging’ activates only when your iPhone predicts it will be connected to a charger for an extended period of time.”

Apple notes that it designed the feature to activate at the locations you frequent most — like home, school or work. So if the feature doesn’t work for you, it could mean your habits don’t establish enough of a pattern (like when traveling) or because your location settings are not enabled.
